General details

This Directive is issued in reference to the adoption of the ASME A17.1 2007/CSA B44-07 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7-07 Performance Based Code for Elevators and Escalators and CSA B44.2-07 Maintenance Requirements and Intervals for Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators and Moving Walks on November 25, 2010 by amending Schedule column 1 and 2 of the Elevating Devices Safety Regulation, B.C. Reg. 101/2004. The purpose of this Directive is to promote an orderly transition between the 2004 and 2007 Code editions and facilitate the transition for Elevating Device contractors.

Specific details

  1. Effective November 25, 2010, Schedule column 1 and 2 of the Elevating Devices Safety Regulation, B.C. Reg. 101/2004 is amended, adopting the:
    1. ASME A17.1 2007/CSA B44-07 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
    2. ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7-07 Performance Based Code for Elevators and Escalators
    3. CSA B44.2-07 Maintenance Requirements and Intervals for Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators and Moving Walks

     with amendments as set out in the schedule column 1 and 2 of the Regulation.

  1. Elevating Devices Drawing and Specifications Submission for Installation Permit

During the transition period between November 25, 2010 and February 25, 2011, submissions may comply with either the 2004 edition or the 2007 edition of the B44 Code. All submissions submitted under the 2004 code from November 25, 2010 up to February 25, 2011 will be filed.  After February 25, 2011 any significant changes to drawings and submissions filed under the 2004 edition will be treated as a re-submission under the B44-07 code and re-submission fees will be payable. Significant changes include but not limited to change in the building address, unit type, unit class, rise, and location of machines.

  1. Effective February 25, 2011 the B44-07 code will be in full effect. All submissions after February 25, 2011 must comply to the B44-07 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators.
