This safety order is issued pursuant to section 31 of the Safety Standards Act. A person affected by this safety order may appeal this order in writing to the Safety Standards Appeal Board within 30 days. The appeal process is set out on the Safety Standards Appeal Board's website at http://www.housing.gov.bc.ca/ssab/.

Failure to comply with a safety order is an offence under section 72 of the Safety Standards Act.

Part 1: Details of Regulated Work or Regulated Product

This Safety Order replaces Safety Order No: SO-L1 090601 4 to reflect amendments to the manufacturer’s maintenance procedures as set out below.

This Safety Order is issued to all Licensed Elevating Devices Contractors that maintain the ThyssenKrupp Northern Elevator Traction Sheave Brake (“Sheave Jammer”) and applies to all makes and models of the Sheave Jammer. This Safety Order is effective immediately.

Part 2: Requirement(s) of This Safety Order

  1. All Licensed Elevating Device Contractors that maintain the Sheave Jammer must comply with the “ThyssenKrupp Northern Elevator Recommended Maintenance and Testing Frequency” laid out in the attached document immediately. In particular, this includes the requirement in Part 4 of the document which specifies that the Sheave Jammer must be dismantled annually for inspection and cleaning then tested after reassembly.
     
  2. Every 12 months, all Licensed Elevating Device Contractors that maintain the Sheave Jammer must submit a Traction Sheave Brake Test Declaration (see URL: http://safetyauthority.ca/form- 1221) to the BCSA. The Traction Sheave Brake Test Declarations should be submitted by email to email address:elevating.devices@safetyauthority.ca with the subject line Sheave Jammer. Each Declaration should be saved individually with the file name referencing the BCSA Unit Number. Multiple files can be attached and submitted in one email.

Part 3: Details of Issue (if applicable)

This safety order is being issued to the following:

- All Licensed Elevating Devices Contractors that maintain the Sheave Jammer.
