Technical Safety BC educates about carbon monoxide at Vancouver Fall Home Show
Technical Safety BC attended the Vancouver Fall Homeshow October 18-21, as part of our continued efforts to reach out to British Columbians about the dangers of carbon monoxide. More than 35,000 homeowners and renters from across the Lower Mainland attended the event.
We tied our home show booth into our year-long carbon monoxide (CO) awareness campaign, #KnowCO, which was aimed at helping raise awareness around the causes of CO poisoning, the symptoms, and prevention.
Our booth space was converted into a small kitchen and living room where we highlighted appliances in the average home that could potentially omit CO. We also partnered with the Fire Chiefs’ Association of British Columbia so they could provide their expertise around best practices around the installation and maintenance of CO detectors.
To help understand knowledge gaps, we created and promoted a quiz titled “How well do you #KnowCO” which asked show attendees to answer three questions about the cause and effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. More than 4,500 attendees (12% of show visitors) took the quiz. Of those, more than 45% got at least one question wrong, providing us with valuable insights into knowledge gaps around CO which we will work to improve understanding of in our future campaigns.
