What lies beneath? Be wary of underground gas lines

Be aware of underground gas lines when adding buildings or related structures to a property. There is always a hazard while excavating in the vicinity of underground gas lines.  A person who intends to excavate must request information on the location of all underground gas lines before any foundations, walls or buildings are considered. Note that plastic underground lines are installed with tracer wires, which allow them to be located with the proper equipment.

Part 6 – Division 1 of the Gas Safety Regulation lists requirements and procedures for installation and excavation. This section includes specifics such as duties for persons constructing near gas installations to procedures if a gas installation is exposed or damaged.

Before starting to dig, contact BC One Call – a free service that provides the location of underground lines. BC One Call can be reached at 1 800 474 6886, or by dialing *6886 from a cell phone.  You can also visit  the BC One Call website to place your inquiry online. Please plan ahead and allow three business days before excavation.
