Class C Elevating Devices Mechanic

The Elevating Devices Mechanic - Class C certificate of qualification allows you to install, alter, repair, and maintain the types of personnel hoists that are identified on your Skills Passport.

To obtain this certificate, you'll need to meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a certification exam.

Once you have submitted your application and declaration forms and paid the applicable fee, we will evaluate your qualifications. If you’re successful, we will contact you and you will be able to apply for the Elevating Devices - Class C exam.

  • Elevator Industry Field Employee’s Safety Handbook 2010 (available from Elevator World)
  • CSA B311-02 Safety Codes for Manlifts (available from CSA)
  • CSA C22.1-12 Canadian Electrical Code Part 1 Section 38 (available from CSA)
  • CSA Z185-M87 Safety Code for Personnel Hoists (available from CSA)

About this exam 

This exam is open book and takes 3 hours. You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% to pass.

You will have three chances to pass; after each attempt, applicants will receive a Notification Letter from Technical Safety BC that details the marks achieved and highlights areas that need improvement. An exam re-write fee applies to each additional attempt.

According to Elevating Devices Safety Regulation, if you fail your exam three times, you must wait five years before you can re-apply.
