Electrical Technology Advisory Committee

The Electrical Technology Advisory Committee (ETAC) is currently recruiting a new regular member representing electrical maintenance contractors and/or installers for a 2019-2021 term. The deadline for applications is December 20, 2018.

ETAC is a formal, standing advisory group created to facilitate discussion within the electrical industry in BC and beyond. The role of the committee is to identify, advise, and partner with Technical Safety BC on new and emerging issues related to:

  • Technical safety
  • Regulatory improvement
  • Service delivery

General qualifications

Technical Safety BC seeks a broad range of expertise and experience on its Technology Advisory Committees. Members bring their independent, well-rounded expertise to the committee as representatives of their industry sector. Members do not formally represent any affiliated association, group or organization and must be able to provide unbiased input and advice. Prospective ETAC members should have the following general qualifications:

  • A solid professional reputation within the safety system and community;
  • Strong ethical standards and personal integrity;
  • Practical knowledge of, and experience in the specific technical area;
  • Understanding of the provincial safety system and general principles of public and worker safety;
  • Ability and willingness to address issues in a non-partisan manner, while considering the opinion of others and working as a team member;
  • Willingness and ability to attend and participate actively in discussions

Term

ETAC members serve an initial three-year term with the possibility of a one-year or three-year renewal. Each year, a review of membership tenure and a sector needs assessment will be conducted by the ETAC chair and co-chair and representatives from Technical Safety BC. General criteria for renewal is based on member attendance, participation, expertise currently required, and sector diversification.

Commitment

ETAC members are expected to attend a minimum of three in-person meetings per year, provide input into meeting agendas and complete meeting pre-work (usually 1-3 hours per meeting). Meetings are typically half-day to full-day sessions and are scheduled in January, March, June and October.

Members are also encouraged to provide input in-between scheduled meetings (as needed) and to chair or participate in working groups, which are focused on specific industry issues identified by the committee as requiring further investigation.

  • Electric Vehicle charging & management systems
  • Photovoltaic systems
  • Permits & inspections
  • Role of Field Safety Representatives (FSRs) & culture in industry
  • FSR certification renewal process & requirements
  • 2018 Canadian Electrical Code
  • Electric shock hazards

Remuneration

Membership on ETAC is voluntary in nature. However, members will receive reimbursements of travel expenses based on Technical Safety BC’s schedule of approved expenses.
