How safe are your railway tracks?

Technical Safety BC Railway safety officers have found that while most railways are compliant with the inspection component (page 17) of the Rules Respecting Track Safety, track defects identified in the inspections have not always been addressed. Track defects are usually categorized as follows:

  • Urgent
  • Repair within one or two months
  • Monitor the condition

Any track defects that have been noted as urgent must be attended to immediately. They should not appear again on the next track inspection.

It is the railway’s responsibility to go over their inspection report with the track inspector and understand the nature of the defects that have been noted. It is also the railway’s responsibility to ensure that once track defects have been repaired, these repairs must be documented on the track inspection reports.
