Make sure your handbrakes are applied and secure

When coupling cars together, railways must conduct a stretch test to check the effectiveness of both the coupling and the handbrakes applied. This will help secure equipment and stock from accidentally rolling away.

Railways must also ensure that a sufficient number of handbrakes are applied based on the tonnage and grade detailed in the chart under Rule 112 (k) of the Canadian Railway Operating Rules.

For more guidance, see Rules 112-113 of the Canadian Railway Operating Rules.
