Sea-to-Sky gondola incident: Media statement

Vancouver, BC, August 12, 2019 - On August 10, 2019, Technical Safety BC was alerted to a downed cable line at Sea-to-Sky Gondola in Squamish which resulted in several gondola cars dropping to the ground. The line was not operational at the time and no one was injured.

We immediately deployed staff to the site to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Since that time and due to evidence of tampering with the gondola haul rope, the Squamish RCMP has launched a criminal investigation.

We are working with the RCMP as an independent party providing technical expertise around the equipment, and are unable to comment until the investigation has been completed.

During this time, questions can be directed to Constable Ashley MacKay, Media Relations Officer, Squamish RCMP, at 604-892-6116 or Ashley.MacKay@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

We thank you for your understanding.
