Disconnection of a Live Gas Line in Dawson Creek Results in Injury and Damage

In winter 2026, in a Dawson Creek home, a small gas explosion and fire occurred causing two workers to receive burns. The incident also caused damage to a furnace, hot water heater and the interior of the home.  

Two unqualified workers were disconnecting gas piping while the gas supply was still on in order to remove a furnace from a tight space. They tried to stop the gas flow by pressing their thumb against the pipe in order to fit a cap on it, a risky practice known in the industry as “live capping.” Although this method is sometimes used in the gas and plumbing field, it’s not allowed under the gas installation code. Unfortunately, the gas was ignited by the nearby water heater’s pilot light, causing injuries and damage.  

One labourer quickly ran outside to turn off the gas at the meter, while the other assisted the occupant in evacuating the home. Technical Safety BC’s investigation revealed that both labourers worked without supervision from a certified journeyperson on site and were unqualified to perform regulated gas work.
