Reference Number:

II-1674372-2024 (#44359)

Location: Penticton

Regulated industry sector: Gas - Propane system

Incident overview

A recreational vehicle (RV) trailer exploded with a single occupant inside after a new propane cylinder was attached to it. During recent renovations the trailer’s propane line was cut in two places. The occupant was neither a certified gas fitter, nor a licensed gas contractor, however they installed a new propane cylinder and hose. The occupant turned on the propane cylinder, followed by the stove and oven. The propane leaked from the cut propane line, contacted a source of ignition and resulted in an explosion. The occupant sustained burns to their hands and face and the trailer was considered a total loss due to significant damage.
