Safety Standards Act s.70 (1) requires individuals not to display, have available for sale, advertise for sale
or sell a regulated product unless it bears a certification mark.
Gas Safety Regulation s.31 (1) requires gas appliances to not be installed unless they bear a certification
or approval mark.
Safety Standards General Regulation s.2.11 defines a certification agency as an organization accredited
by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) as an organization engaged in conformity assessment. This
includes both accreditation as a certification body or inspection body.
Canadian certification marks associated with a nationally recognized certification standard can be applied
on gas appliances and equipment by an accredited Standards Council of Canada (SCC) certification
agency.
Field approval labels can be applied on gas appliances and equipment by an SCC accredited inspection
body only if an associated nationally recognized standard does not exist. A field approval becomes void if
the appliance is altered or relocated. Learn more about gas appliance field approvals.
To find contact information, confirm scope of accreditation, or verify the status and acceptability of any
certification mark or approval label applied to a gas appliance or piece of equipment, visit the Standards
Council of Canada website and search here using a key word or name of the certification agency or
