This safety order states that compressed air systems and air receivers should be tested weekly, serviced every three years, and complete examinations for those air receivers that are over 20 years of age.

This safety order is being issued pursuant to section 31 of the Safety Standards Act. A person affected by this safety order may appeal this order, in writing, to the Safety Standards Appeal Board in accordance with Section 51 of the Safety Standards Act. It is an offence under section 72 to not comply with a safety order.

Part 1: Details of regulated work or regulated product

This safety order is being issued with respect to compressed air systems and air receivers due to a recent incident involving an air receiver. This Safety Order supersedes Safety Order SO-B6 050421 1 issued on April 21, 2005.

Part 2: Requirement(s) of this Safety Order

It is hereby ordered effective immediately that all owners of the regulated product identified above must adhere to the following testing and servicing schedule:

  • Weekly testing of safety valves for freedom of operation
  • Servicing or replacement of safety valves every three years
  • Complete non-destructive examination of air receivers over 20 years of age. This inspection shall include the use of surface and volumetric NDE testing as applicable, to determine thickness and identify defects such as cracking, corrosion and pitting.

Owners have until July 20, 2005 to meet the requirements of this order.

All pressure vessels regulated by the Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation must be registered and inspected by the British Columbia Safety Authority.
