FortisBC upgrading to Advanced Gas Meters

FortisBC is working to build a more advanced gas delivery system for its more than one million customers across British Columbia. In early May 2021, FortisBC filed an application with, the British Columbia Utilities Commission to upgrade natural gas meters as part of the Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project.

The installation of advanced gas meters started in 2023, with exchanges done as part of the FortisBC’s regular operation (e.g., Measurement Canada testing). FortisBC anticipates exchanging nearly all residential and commercial gas customers to advanced gas meters by 2028. Province-wide meter exchanges are also being accompanied by ongoing installation of a private network to allow for wireless communication between the meters and FortisBC, expected to be ready by early 2025. FortisBC will share project updates and the meter installation schedule when available.
