Boilers, Pressure Vessels, and Refrigeration Contractor Licenses

A licensed contractor is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Safety Standards Act, all relevant regulations, and all applicable safety orders and directives. All contractors working with boiler and pressure vessel equipment must be licensed by Technical Safety BC. 

Applying for your contractor licence

  1. Complete the boiler contractor licence application form
  2. Submit the completed form to contact@technicalsafetybc.ca or to a Technical Safety BC office
  3. Have a BC Business Registration number.
  4. Once the form is processed, Technical Safety BC will contact you to pay the relevant boiler licence fee (listed below).

Renewing your licence

Licences need to be renewed annually.

If you’ve received your renewal notice and would like to apply for an updated contractor licence, please call 1 866 566 7233 to pay by credit card or bring your completed renewal form and payment to any Technical Safety BC office.

Understanding contractor licences

The conditions of your licence may allow you to perform maintenance, installations, testing, alterations, or disposals. You need to have a licence for each type of boiler or pressure vessel technology that you intend to work with.

The established classes of contractor licence are AAuApB, PWREFSRVMA (PV), & MA(PF)

A

Authorized to install, alter, repair or maintain boilers, pressure vessels, and to construct, repair, install, maintain or alter pressure piping systems limited to the scope in the registered quality control manual. The scope of this licence also covers "Au", "Ap", & "B" class licence work. It does not cover refrigeration plants (except for pressure vessels and pressure piping systems attached to the refrigeration plant).

AU

Authorized to install, alter, repair or maintain pressure vessels, and to construct install, repair, maintain or alter pressure piping systems limited to the scope in the registered quality control manual. The scope of this licence also covers "Ap" class licence work. It does not cover refrigeration plans (except for pressure vessels and pressure piping attached to the refrigeration plant).

AP

Authorized to construct, install, repair, maintain, or alter pressure piping systems, including refrigeration plant piping systems as limited by the scope in the registered quality control manual.

Note: A quality control manual is required for submission for the licence

B

Authorized to install, maintain or repair a low pressure low temperature fluid heating plant with 150 m² or less of heating surface, a fluid heating plant with 75 m² or less of heating surface, a low pressure steam plant with 30 m² or less of heating surface, a high pressure steam plant with 10 m² or less of heating surface, and hot water heaters.

PW

Authorized to manage a pressure welding program as limited by the scope in the registered quality control manual.

Note: A quality control manual is required when applying for the licence

REF

Authorized to install, alter, maintain or repair a refrigeration plant or system of 5 kW or more rating as listed on the prime mover nameplate, or package unit nameplate.

SRV

Authorized to service, repair, set and test safety valves and safety relief valves as limited by the scope in the registered quality control manual.

MA:
Screen level MA(PV);
certificate MA

Authorized for shop fabrication of pressure vessels as per CSA-B51, and the shop fabrication of ASME pressure piping as per B 31.9, B 31.5, B 31.1. Limited to the scope in the registered quality control manual.

MA:
Screen level MA (PF);
certificate MA

Authorized for shop fabrication of pressure fittings as per CSA-B51, and the shop fabrication of ASME pressure piping as per B 31.9, B 31.5, B 31.3, B 31.1. Limited to the scope in the registration quality control manual.

To check if a contractor is licensed with Technical Safety BC, go to our Find a Contractor page and enter their name or company name. If you do not see them listed, they may be operating under a different name or a numbered company.
