Elevating Devices Operating Permits

All active elevating devices (elevators, material lifts, dumbwaiters, LULAs, escalators and moving walks) must have an operating permit. It is the responsibility of the building owner to obtain an operating permit and renew it each year.

New Installations

Once a newly installed elevating device has passed an inspection, Technical Safety BC will send an invoice to the owner for the operating permit. The operating permit must be obtained within 60 days of the elevating device passing the inspection. The operating permit can be obtained by the property owner, general contractor, developer or property manager. Renewals

Operating permits must be renewed each year. Technical Safety BC will mail a renewal reminder and form 30 days before the operating permit expires. Please renew in person at any Technical Safety BC office or by phone (1 866 566 7233). A renewal fee will be charged.

Building owners who hold an operating permit are obliged to hire a licensed contractor to perform mandatory maintenance on the device -- we will revoke the operating permit if you fail to comply. For full details, see the Mandatory Maintenance directive.
