Gas Design Registration

Design Registration for Uncertified Gas Equipment or Systems

Where a Canadian recognized standard (CRS) or other recognized document (ORD) exists, a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) will be required to certify the appliance.

In cases where a CRS or ORD does not exist, Technical Safety BC may fulfill the product approval process. Alternatively, the client may contact an inspection body accredited by the SCC to perform the equipment approval. For a list of approved certification markings from SCC accredited certification agencies, review gas directive D-G5 051201 2 Approved Certification Marks for Gas Appliances.

If the client is seeking product approval by Technical Safety BC, they must first apply through the design registration process. Technical Safety BC considers applications for gas equipment product approvals on a case-by-case basis. Design registrations are site specific, one time use, and only valid for the installation address identified on the design registration letter.

Design Registration - New Gas Appliance, No Existing Standard

To submit a design registration for a new gas appliance where a standard does not exist, complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the appropriate application for gas design registration and submit it with the proper documentation to Technical Safety BC or electronically to the Administrator for Gas Equipment Approvals.
  2. Once the design is registered, a design registration journal number is issued allowing the required product approval to be obtained.
  3. Complete product approval permit (Form 500). This product approval must be applied for and in place before regulated work can begin and a safety officer can perform the required field assessment and approval of the equipment.

Note: The appliance must not be placed in operation until it has a label or mark as detailed in section 31 of the Gas Safety Regulations - See more at Gas Equipment Approvals.

Gas Systems

Where a gas system requires the review and acceptance of drawings by Technical Safety BC, an application for design registration must completed and submitted with all applicable drawings at the time of application.

To submit a design registration where a gas system only requires drawings to be reviewed and registered complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the appropriate application for gas design registration and submit it with the proper documentation to Technical Safety BC or electronically to the Administrator for Gas Equipment Approvals.
  2. Once the design is registered, a design registration journal number is issued allowing the required gas installation permit to be obtained by a licensed gas contractor.

Note: Your gas contractor must have an installation permit in place before the work is started. The gas contractor will ensure that the appliance or system is tested and safely installed, while working with the local gas safety officer.

Design Submission Applications

To submit a design registration complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the Main Design Registration Form as well as the sub form appropriate to your application
  2.  and submit it with the proper documentation to Technical Safety BC or electronically to the Administrator for Gas Equipment Approvals.
  3. Once the design is registered, a design registration journal number is issued allowing the required gas installation permit to be obtained by a licensed gas contractor.

Subforms for Specific Application Types

If your equipment or system does not fall within the application types listed, please call the administrator or your local gas safety officer for direction.
