Electrical FSR Certification

Overview

The Class B-R: Refrigeration field safety representative (FSR) certificate of qualification is a restricted class within the Class B category. With this certificate, you may make declarations on behalf of your employer for regulated electrical work only with respect to electrical installations in which the voltage of the completed installation does not exceed 750 volts. This applies to the following installations: circuits for refrigeration equipment, air-conditioning units, heat pumps and chillers.

To obtain this certificate, you'll need to meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a certification exam.

Note: this certificate class was previously named class RE (Refrigeration).

You may fabricate, install, alter, repair or service any system used for cooling or heating (i.e., heat pumps) in closed systems that contain a refrigeration or a brine and thermoelectric cooling. The scope of work also includes piping, controls and electrical work usually performed by a journeyperson, and branch circuit wiring from existing enclosures containing overcurrent devices.

The scope of work not included under this certificate include electrical work on fire alarm systems and electrical work in hazardous locations.

You must provide proof of one of the following:

  • Canadian Interprovincial Standards Qualification ‘IPSE’ Certificate in the trade of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (Refrigeration Mechanic)
  • BC Certificate of Qualification in the Trade of Refrigeration Mechanic. Exemption certification in the Trade of Refrigeration Mechanic (REX)

A copy of the interprovincial certification (Red Seal) is also required if you're qualified but from another Canadian province.

How to Apply For Examination

Once you have submitted your application and paid the applicable fee, we will evaluate your qualifications. If you’re successful, we will contact you and you will be able to apply for this certification's exam.

Once you have been approved to apply for the exam, log in to your Online Services account to find your available exam and choose your preferred exam dates, times, and locations. You will not be able to book your exam until we notify you that you are eligible.

The class B-R - Refrigeration FSR exam takes 2.5 hours. It is open book and is made up of 40 multiple choice questions, with a 35% focus on Act, Regulations, and Directive, and a 65% focus on Code. You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% to pass.

 

You will have three chances to pass; after each attempt, applicants will receive a Notification Letter from Technical Safety BC that details the marks achieved and highlights areas that need improvement. An exam re-write fee applies to each additional attempt.

If you fail an exam, you will will need to wait 30 days after the previous examination to rebook. If you fail your third or any subsequent attempt, you must request permission to take a fourth or further attempts, with additional time required between each attempt.
