Prerequisites

An applicant for a BC gas Class A or Class B certificate of qualification must:

  • Meet the requirements of the Safety Standards Act (Act) and applicable regulation.
  • Provide proof acceptable to the provincial safety manager of the applicants' identity.
  • Provide a Gasfitter Red Seal Certification or other recognized Canadian gasfitter credential that is in good standing in the jurisdiction where it was issued.
  • Successfully pass the Act, Regulations and Directives (ARD) exam.

A Gasfitter - Class A Certificate of Qualification entitles the holder to perform the installation or alteration of any gas system, except vehicle fuel systems, under the appropriate permit.

A Gasfitter - Class B Certificate of Qualification entitles the holder to perform the installation or alteration of the following gas systems under the appropriate permit:

  • An appliance with an input of 120 kW or less that displays a label or mark as follows:
    • a certification mark; or
    • an approval mark issued under section 10 of the Act.
  • Piping and vents

Successful completion of the ARD exam is defined as 70% or higher.

If an individual fails to pass the exam on their initial attempt, they must wait 30 days after the written date to take the exam again.

If an individual fails to pass the exam on any subsequent attempt, the provincial safety manager may stipulate terms and conditions in respect of the length of time that must elapse before the individual may take the exam again.
