Overview

The Class C-R - Instrument Mechanic Field Safety Representative (FSR) certificate of qualification is a restricted class within the Class C category. With this certificate, you may install, repair, maintain, replace, calibrate and program equipment for process monitoring and control instruments including hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, fluidic, nuclear, optical or chemical signal transmission, telemetering and digital devices, in industrial operations. The scope of work is restricted to regulated work on electrical equipment within the scope of the trade certificate (Class I and Class II circuits).

To obtain this certificate, you'll need to meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a certification exam.

Note: this certificate class was previously named class IN (Instrument Mechanic).

You must provide proof that you have one of the following:

  • BC Industry Training Authority (ITA) Instrument and Control Technician Canadian Interprovincial Standards Examination 'IPSE' Certificate
  • Industrial Instrument Mechanic Trade Certificate of Qualification
  • Diploma of Technology in Automation and Instrumentation Technology together with a minimum of one year (1800 hrs) acceptable relevant work experience

The class C-R - Instrument Mechanic FSR exam takes 2.5 hours. It is open book and is made up of 40 multiple choice questions, with a 35% focus on Act, Regulations, and Directive, and a 65% focus on Code. You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% to pass.
