Antique Show Boiler Operator
Operator Certification
Overview
An Antique Show Boiler Operator Certificate of Qualification authorizes the holder to operate the type of antique show boiler named on their certificate.
There are two categories of this certification:
- Antique Show Boiler Operator – Traction Engine
Holders of an Antique Show Boiler Operator – Traction Engine certificate may operate antique show boilers associated with a traction engine, as well as any other antique show boilers, except steam locomotives. - Antique Show Boiler Operator – Locomotive
Holders of an Antique Show Boiler Operator – Locomotive certificate may operate antique show boilers that are part of a steam locomotive.
General Eligibility
In order to apply for your Antique Show Boiler Operator certificate, you must provide:
- A completed Plant Operating Experience Form (FRM1026) with at least 100 hours of acceptable experience in the construction, repair, operation, and maintenance of antique show boilers.
- A detailed testimonial describing your acceptable experience.

How to Apply for Certification
To apply, log in to your Online Services account and select "Apply for a new certificate" under the certification tab. Don't have an account? Sign up now.
If you wish to apply by mail, please fill out the Contact Us form to request a paper form.
How to Apply for Examination
Once you have submitted your application and paid the applicable fee, we will evaluate your qualifications. If you’re successful, we will contact you and you will be able to apply for this certification's exam.
Once your application has been reviewed and approved, Technical Safety BC will contact you to arrange your examination.
Application Completion Deadline
You have 3 years from the date your certificate application is created to complete the application process. If your application remains incomplete after 3 years, it will be closed and any progress made, as well as any fees paid, will be forfeited. If you still require a certificate, you will need to submit a new application.

About These Exams
To obtain Antique Show Boiler Operator certification, applicants must successfully complete:
- A written multiple-choice examination, and
- A practical evaluation conducted by a Technical Safety BC Safety Officer.
The practical evaluation test can only be booked once the written examination is passed.
About the Written Exam
The Antique Show Boiler Operator written examination:
- Contains 100 multiple-choice questions
- Has a time limit of 3.5 hours
- Requires a minimum passing mark of 65%

About the Practical Evaluation Test
The practical evaluation includes an operating demonstration and knowledge assessment to verify that the applicant has a thorough understanding of:
- The operation of the antique show boiler for which they are responsible
- Safe operating practices
- Duties and responsibilities associated with the operation and maintenance of the antique show boiler

Evaluation Eligibility
Prior to scheduling the practical evaluation, you must pass the written exam, and provide written proof that you are:
- The owner of an antique show boiler, or
- The person designated as responsible for the operation and maintenance of an antique show boiler.
This documentation must be submitted in the form of a designation letter that:
- Identifies the individual by name;
- Is provided on company or organization letterhead (where applicable); and
- Includes details of the antique show boiler(s) for which the individual is responsible.

Apply for Evaluation
To book the practical evaluation test, please contact your local boiler safety officer directly. The practical evaluation test can only be booked once the written examination is passed.
Upgrading Between Traction Engine and Locomotive Certificates
Individuals who hold an Antique Show Boiler Operator – Traction Engine certificate and wish to operate a locomotive-type antique show boiler must obtain an Antique Show Boiler Operator – Locomotive certificate. Likewise, individuals who hold an Antique Show Boiler Operator – Locomotive certificate and wish to operate a traction engine-type antique show boiler must obtain an Antique Show Boiler Operator – Traction Engine certificate.
In each case:
- The written examination is not required.
- The applicant must successfully complete the practical evaluation test for the antique show boiler type (Traction Engine or Locomotive) for which certification is being sought.

Renew Your Certificate
Your certificate is valid for three years after the date of issue and then can be renewed through your online account.
Renewing early does not shorten the active period of your certificate, but renewing after the expiration date will be subject to late renewal fees.
