Oil Well Boiler Operator

The Oil Well Boiler Operator certificate allows you to operate an oil well plant that:

  • Operates on a portable oil rig or drilling site
  • Does not exceed 100 m2 of boiler capacity

To obtain this certificate, you will need to meet certain eligibility requirements. You will also need to pass a certification exam and an evaluation.

Note: At this time, we only accept out-of-province granted certificate applications.

In order to apply for your Oil Well Boiler Operator certificate, you must have one of the following:

  • At least six months experience in the operation of an oil well plant
  • Completed an approved course  (qualifying time not required)

Note: you will need to complete a copy of our plant operating experience form and upload the completed document to your certificate application. Your proof of experience will be reviewed by a Provincial Safety Manager.

 

How to Apply For Examination

Once you have submitted your application and paid the applicable fee, we will evaluate your qualifications. If you’re successful, we will contact you and you will be able to apply for this certification's exam.

Once you have been approved to apply for the exam, log in to your Online Services account and select "Book or view exams" under the certification tab. From there, you can view your available exam and choose your preferred dates, times, and locations. You will not be able to book your exam until we notify you that you are eligible.

Application Completion Deadline

You have 3 years from the date your certificate application is created to complete the application process. If your application remains incomplete after 3 years, it will be closed and any progress made, as well as any fees paid, will be forfeited. If you still require a certificate, you will need to submit a new application.

To view the application creation date for your certificate, log in to your Online Services account.

This exam is 3.5 hours long, and you must achieve a minimum grade of 65% to pass.

 

You will have three chances to pass; after each attempt, applicants will receive a Notification Letter from Technical Safety BC that details the marks achieved and highlights areas that need improvement. An exam re-write fee applies to each additional attempt.

If you fail an exam, you will will need to wait 30 days after the previous examination to rebook. If you fail your third or any subsequent attempt, you must request permission to take a fourth or further attempt, with additional time required between each attempt.

Renew Your Certificate

Your certificate is valid for three years after the date of issue and then can be renewed through your online account.

Renewing early does not shorten the active period of your certificate, but renewing after the expiration date will be subject to late renewal fees.
