Class B Gas Fitter
Gas Certification
Overview
Effective January 1, 2025, the Gasfitter - Class B program became a Red Seal trade administered and certified by SkilledTradesBC. New applicants in BC who are looking to perform work as a Class B Gasfitter will require a Gasfitter - Class B Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement issued by SkilledTradesBC and a Certificate of Qualification issued by Technical Safety BC.
The requirement to hold a Gasfitter - Class B Red Seal Certification applies only to applicants who have completed the Gasfitter - Class B Red Seal Apprenticeship pathway. This requirement is not retroactive and does not apply to existing Class B gasfitters with a valid Technical Safety BC certification.
Individuals who have not followed the Gasfitter - Class B Red Seal apprenticeship pathway may continue to apply for their Technical Safety BC certification until early 2026 by submitting either their Gasfitter - Class B Certificate of Apprenticeship or BC Certificate of Qualification issued by SkilledTradesBC, as well as a course completion document from a recognized training program.
A Gasfitter - Class B (120kW) Certificate of Qualification allows you to perform installations and alterations on the following gas systems, under a permit:
- appliances with an input of 120 kW or less that display a certification mark or an approval mark issued under section 10 of the Act; and
- piping and vents.
In addition, Class B gasfitters may perform electrical work that is restricted to the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical wiring for solid, liquid, and gaseous fuel-fired heating equipment for any of the following:
- connecting branch circuit wiring to the heating equipment's integral connection box, from a junction box or a disconnect mounted in close proximity to the heating equipment;
- Class 2 circuit wiring up to a rated output of 100 Volt amps; and
- low voltage controls or 24-volt thermostats.
To obtain this certificate, applicants will need to meet certain eligibility requirements, pass an exam, and submit an additional training credential or certificate.
