Class C-R: Security Alarm

Electrical FSR Certification

Overview

The class C-R - Security Alarm field safety representative (FSR) certificate of qualification is a restricted class within the Class C category. With this certificate, you may design, install, repair, maintain, replace, test and service the operation of all intruder and security alarm systems in accordance with the provisions of the Ministry of Justice Security Industry & Licensing and the Security Services Act.

To obtain this certificate, you'll need to meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a certification exam.

Note: this certificate class was previously named class SA (Security Alarm).

You may also submit declarations for the work performed under this scope and perform regulated electrical work on electrical equipment for all wiring and equipment installed, restricted to circuits that have the power supply limited in accordance with the requirements for Class 2 circuits, which is a maximum 100 volt amperes. You may also work on a dedicated branch circuit from an existing panel board or extension of an existing branch circuit wiring, rated at 15 amperes, 120 volt, to an outlet installed specifically for a Class 2 power supply.

The scope of work not authorized under this certificate includes electrical work on fire alarm systems and electrical work in hazardous locations.

You must provide proof that you have:

  • A BC Certificate of Qualification in the Trade of Security Alarms Installer.
  • Completed a recognized electrical course in the application of electrical codes and standards, from a recognized training provider or instructor completed within three years of application date.

The class C-R - Security Alarm FSR exam takes 2.5 hours. It is open book and is made up of 40 multiple choice questions, with a 35% focus on Act, Regulations, and Directive, and a 65% focus on Code. You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% to pass.
