Gas Certification
Overview
The Special Purpose Certificate of Qualification (SPCQ) allows you to perform limited regulated gas work, and only under the conditions specifically endorsed on your certificate.
Technical Safety BC no longer issues new Special Purpose Gas Certificate classes. Following the introduction of SkilledTradesBC’s compulsory gasfitter certification program on December 1, 2023, Technical Safety BC only issues and re-issues certificates for the following recognized special purpose certification programs:
Special Effects Technician
Inspection, Maintenance and Requalification of Portable Gas Fired Heaters
Landfill Gas Technician
Natural Gas Compressor Service Technician
Applicants must meet the eligibility, training, and competency requirements for the specific class. For detailed application requirements and certificate conditions, refer to our directive.
General Eligibility
To qualify for a Special Purpose certificate, applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:
You are a licensed gas contractor
You are employed by a licensed gas contractor
You are working under the permission of an operating permit
You must also have successfully completed training recognized by the provincial safety manager designed specifically for the purpose of the Special Purpose certificate.

How to Apply For Certification
To apply, log in to your Online Services account and select "Apply for a new certificate" under the certification tab. Don't have an account? Sign up now.
If you wish to apply by mail, please fill out the Contact Us form to request a paper form.
Once you have submitted your application and paid the applicable fee, we will evaluate your qualifications. If you’re successful, your special purpose certificate will be issued.
Certificate Renewal
A Special Purpose certificate can be issued for a duration of up to 3 years. Once expired, the certificate is no longer valid, and the holder must not perform regulated gas work until the certificate is renewed or re-issued.
Certificates may be renewed within three years after their expiry date. After that period, it is permanently closed and may no longer be renewed. A closed certificate is subject to re-issuance requirements. Re-issuances of SPCQs by Technical Safety BC are limited to the four active SPCQ programs identified above. All other SPCQ classes that have reached “closed” status will be not eligible for re-issuance and will remain permanently closed.
Email us to apply to renew your Special Purpose certificate. In your email, include an updated letter of employment, and an updated record of approved training.
