Electrical FSR: Class C

Class C field safety representative

The class C field safety representative (FSR) certificate of qualification allows you to submit declarations on behalf of your employer for regulated electrical work only with respect to electrical installations where the voltage of the installation is under 150 volts to ground, ampacity is restricted to 200 amps or less, and single phase power is used.

To obtain this certificate, you'll need to meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a certification exam.

Exam eligibility

For electricians

  • You must provide proof you have one of the following:
    • Canadian Interprovincial Qualification (Red Seal) in the Trade of Electrician
    • BC Trade Qualification in Electrical Work (construction or industrial)
    • BC Exemption Permit in the Trade of Electrician (EWX)
  • You must have a minimum of one year (1,800 hours) acceptable relevant electrical work experience under the Canadian Electrical Code, after receiving a Certificate of Qualification in the Trade of Electrician.
  • You must provide proof of completion of a recognized electrical course in the application of electrical codes and standards, from a recognized training provider or instructor completed within three years of application date.

For electrical professional engineers (P.Eng)

You must have:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Acceptable proof of relevant work experience utilizing the Canadian Electrical Code – C22.1-18 Part 1.
  • Valid registration as a professional engineer, and good standing with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (formerly APEG BC – Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia).

For electrical applied science technologist (AScT)

You must have:

  • An Electrical Engineering Technology (power option) qualification.
  • Acceptable proof of relevant work experience utilizing the Canadian Electrical Code – C22.1-18 Part 1.
  • Valid registration as an Applied Science Technologist and good standing with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ATTBC).

About this exam 

The class C exam takes 3.5 hours. It is open book and is made up of 60 multiple choice questions, with a 35% focus on Act, Regulations, and Directive, and a 65% focus on Code. You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% to pass.
